World expo is a great event, especially because it is held in Shanghai, China. I was glad to be one of the team members of the trip organized by our school. This trip is very special for me. Firstly, there are both Chinese and South Asian students in the team. At first, I thought it would be not easy to get along with the Non -Chinese Students in these five days as there may be cultural misunderstanding between me and them. Secondly, the transport from Hong Kong to Shanghai is by train – the journey is as long as 18 hours! It is too new and scary for me as I had never such experience.

On the first day of the trip, when I went into the train, my first impression was: how small the beds are! They are just 2 feet wide, they are really small! The corridor in the train was narrow too. I didn't feel good inside the compartment. Moreover The South Asian schoolmates look very shy. When I say Hi to them, their feedback was cold; I thought maybe it was because we didn't know each other well. The return trip to Hong Kong, however, was more interesting. I played games with everybody. I found that South Asian students were really nice!

Most importantly, this trip had widened my horizon. I went to China Pavilion, Israel Pavilion, and Swiss Pavilion and so on. Among all these fabulous pavilions, the China pavilion inspired me the most. It displays the features, challenges and solutions of Chinese's urban development from the standpoint of culture and humanity, and it does look back into history and looking forward to the future. A visit to the China Pavilion is surely inspiring. One can understand Chinese wisdom in urban development.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to thank the teachers of IKTMC, especially Ms Gabriel Lo and Mr. Andy Fung, and the principal for offering me a chance to participate in this great event.

Although the world expo trip actually just allowed us to stay in Shanghai for two and a half days, it gave me lots of pleasure memories! Before I visited Shanghai, I was not sure about what is inside the expo. I just knew the expo will show visitors latest technologies and different cultural performances to attract people's attention. After the journey, my mind was changed! In the expo, the pavilions did not only introduce histories and heritage of their country, but also the future plans to let mankind have a better life!

Take China pavilion as an example. It tells us how china changed from an agricultural country to a major financial and industrial country and it shows us Chinese innovations lots to save our earth and prevent the shortage of energy. As Global warming is getting worse and worse year by year, each country should set different policies to save the Earth before the situation really becomes irreversible. Otherwise, it would be too late to cry over spill milk!

Besides, I experienced how the innovations in the Expo can apply to our life. In the 21st century, it is no doubt that everybody wants a wonderful life, especially for the people of Sichuan, where lots of people died of the strong earthquake in 2008. After the disaster, some companies created vary facilities to face strong earthquakes. They include special ceiling for houses. I hope these can help people who live in the earthquake area to resist the horrible disasters.

In these few days I could have a glimpse of the current situation of shanghai too. We visited different parts of shanghai, for example, the famous TV tower and some other tourist attractions. I saw nostalgic or modern architectures. I had tasted local’s cuisine, like shanghai bean curt and pork buns. They all gave me unforgettable memories!

Last but not least, in this journey I have met lots of friends in our school. In school, most of us are always in a hurry, so we do not have chances to meet other students from other classes but in this journey we have 5 days to live, play, chat and eat together. So thanks to this occasion, I had widened my social-circle!

To end in a nutshell, this trip is extraordinary exciting and wonderfully memorable. I hope I can join a trip like this again!

Before the trip, I planned to visit 4 to 5 European countries’ pavilions. When I learned that I would have the chance to join this trip, as I could learn the cultures and developments in different countries, and had sightseeing in Shanghai.

This was my first time to sleep on train. I found it is a new experience to me as the space in the train for every passenger was limited, and I needed to share with 5 persons in a small compartment for about 18 hours. I felt the journey boring because I had nothing to do on the train but only playing card game with my friends and sleeping.

When we arrived at Shanghai, we firstly visited China pavilion. As it is one of the most popular pavilions; we took about 45 minutes for queuing before getting in. However, I think it was worthy because we could see ‘’Along the river during the Qingming Festival” in electronic version which was interesting and attractive. There was an exhibition showing the recent technology development in China, especially the part in greening. I learned that China has played an active role in this aspect, but she should continue. If China can reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and develop other methods to generate electricity which are more environmentally friendly than burning coal and oil, the international status of China can be raised.

Other than visiting China pavilion, I had also visited many other pavilions. Among these pavilions, I like Osaka and Turkey pavilion the most. Osaka pavilion introduces the city and its development in recent years. Although I have never visited the city before, the pavilion can give me a brief knowledge of the city. Turkey pavilion shows the history of the country and the ceramics made in 7000 years ago.

In a nutshell, visiting EXPO in Shanghai is a really valuable experience to me.

My trip to Shanghai, China was like taking a ride on the roller coaster that has a seemingly long track but the ride comes to an end in minutes! The 18 hours ride on the train that took me through perfectly proportioned farmlands, peaceful villages with beautiful red-brick bungalows engulfed by the natural beauty by which I was hypnotized.

Out of the 5 days, 2 days were spent on traveling which left us 3 days to enjoy, observe and learn, the World Expo, Shanghainese lifestyle and the rich information provided by various Pavilions, (for instance, the Broad Pavilion and the Footprint Pavilion) respectively. I with my fellow group mates and the teachers in-charge managed to visit 7 pavilions which I’d say wasn’t a very bad number.

Below, I would like to share some of the pros and cons on the trip to the World Expo in Shanghai followed by a comparison done according to my observation between Hong Kong and Shanghai.

To begin with the pros, firstly, the accommodation provided was satisfying to me because the washrooms were clean with all the necessities in it, the beds were comfy, and the rooms was pretty big, equipped with air-conditioners.

Secondly, the tour guide was a friendly, advising and an alert man. He was flexible to make changes in order to meet the needs of Muslims in special cases. The travel agency gave us a very worthwhile gift which was a light, foldable chair. It might seem funny to the readers of this article but you will only realize its worth and existence when you are lining up for hours in the queue or after walking under the blazing sun.

Followed by the cons, Halal meals for Muslims students was quite inconvenient to buy due to lack in the number of Halal food restaurants. The Travel agency could have done better on this. Also, not every so-called Halal food restaurants are reliable.

Further continuation of this article is a brief comparison between Hong Kong and Shanghai. This is nothing related with any sorts of discrimination but just my reflection on the two cities and its citizens from a number of perspectives, for example, quality of life and tourism.

In terms of quality of life, I’d say both the Shanghainese and the Hong Kong people meet at a similar level because they both have a high standard of materialistic life as we can see skyscrapers, malls, luxurious hotels and houses, International Financial Center, Banks, Trendy stores, e.g. Bossini, Giordano, Crocodile, Gucci, etc. However, there are obviously many constraints for the people in Mainland China while the Hong Kongers enjoy the freedom of speech, media, education and reproduction (giving birth). I have observed that there weren’t many teenagers in China, which shows that the gap between the young and old is very huge in China due to the 1 child policy, and there’s a very great chance that they would face aging problem. Furthermore, throughout the 3-day trip inside Shanghai, I only 1 primary school, which is hard to belief because in a place as small as Hong Kong, we can see 4-5 school blocks in a row.

Apart from the quality of life, I’d like to talk about the quality of people too. I found that Hong Kong Chinese are more mannered and clean. Also, they don’t stare at the non-Chinese in a way as they are from a different planet. But the Mainland Chinese are more bold and unashamed of doing something very unhygienic like spitting and blowing their noses without using tissues.

In terms of Tourism, which is one of the main industries Hong Kong is depending on and it’s doing pretty well. It is the situation in Shanghai too. Albeit Shanghai has ample land for agriculture, however, it is very much commercialized and run numerous factories too. I’ve learned from the Tour guide that the agriculture and fishing industries have decreased.

To encapsulate, the overall trip was a total new experience for me to broaden my horizon and meet Chinese apart from the HK-Chinese and to get the first hand view at the Chinese past and present. There’s a saying that each coin has two sides and I’d say the important thing is to learn how to be flexible with two sides.

Mr. Raza

It was my first time visiting China, in particular, Shanghai.
In Shanghai, we first visited the Expo. It was an amazing place equipped with architectural pavilions of different countries together with large crowds of people.
The visit to the China pavilion was interesting. Although, we waited for approximately an hour to get inside the pavilion, we spent around 2 hours touring inside with Mr. Jacky, our travel guide. We saw different types of renewable energy in China, cultural and historical aspects of China…etc. The further we went, the more we got clipped. Eventually, it was already mid-afternoon so we headed straight for lunch.
After having some food in a Pakistani restaurant, Mr. Jacky parted us. A consensus was reached that we head to the Pakistan pavilion as it resembled most of the identity of the students and that most were interested to see what did the pavilion offer to the general public. Inside the pavilion, we were able to see the cultural, historical and religious aspects of Pakistan.  What was more interesting was the section of pictures entitled something like “Long Live Pakistan-China Relationship”. Thanks to Allah, we were fortunate enough to meet Chinese Muslim students, both male and female from a school in China who came to visit the Pakistan pavilion. We exchanged words and took pictures. Some of us later bought stuffs in the pavilion while some prayed.
Time really flies fast when you are enjoying. There was not much time left to visit another pavilion. We headed straight to our pit-stop. It is really sad that we couldn’t visit more pavilions. The Chinese groups seem to have visited 1-2 pavilions more than us. It is really unfortunate that Mr. Jacky parted us. That meant that I had to control my NCS group solely.
After having dinner in a Moslem restaurant, we went to a place in Shanghai in which we saw many spectacular buildings such as the HSBC buildings and other commercial ones. The nightlights reminded me of Victoria Park. We took a lot of pictures and then we went shopping in that area. We bought more food for dinner in the hotel. Most of the students seem to have enjoyed it although they were tired.

Second day and Third day
Learning from yesterday, we did better time management and group control. This meant that we were able to visit more pavilions. The pavilion of footsteps was really eye-catching. In this pavilion, we were fortunate enough to have a free tour guide service in English. Most of the students were interactive and asked a great deal of questions. This is in line with the concepts of multiple perspectives, broad knowledge, critical thinking in Liberal Studies.
The next day, we went to the Oriental Pearl Tower. It was an amazing sight. I really enjoyed going there.

Overall
It was very sad that we did not have much time to visit some of the prominent pavilions given that long queues were hindering us from going there. We also had little time on the first day of Expo. Time was just insufficient for us to find, queue and tour other pavilions.
As a Muslim, I felt very disappointed that there was barely any prayer room for Muslims to pray and the few Muslim catering outlets. Although Shanghai is not an Islamic state, I still do believe that they should respect and cater religious beliefs. They ought to have a place for religious practices to carry out. We cannot label ourselves just as Muslims, we need to practice it.
Overall speaking, the experience and knowledge gained has been very vital to my Liberal Studies career and also in terms of teacher-training. I have learnt many things which could not have been experienced within the theoretical level of my university education. To me, this Expo is a shortcut in gaining experiences and inheriting knowledge from different pavilions of different countries when compared to travelling to each country. This expo is extremely essential for Liberal Studies students.
I am glad to be given this opportunity to assist IKTMC. I hope that I will continue to facilitate IKTMC in their educational trips.
