On October 2nd 2008, Indian and Nepalese students went to the Indian Consulate in Wan Chai, to commemorate the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi and his philosophy of non- violence. Mr. Jain, the Consular General for Cultural and Educational affairs, hosted the programme. The students watched a movie on the philosophy of non- violence by Gandhiji and how it was implemented to obtain freedom from the British rule in India. Such was the impact of this movement that all the Indians, irrespective of religion or region, joined hands and stood up for the struggle of freedom. After the movie, students took part in some fun games related to ‘Great leaders of the world’ and ‘virtues in our life’. Students also enjoyed snacks provided by the consulate. Overall, it was a very informative and educative session in an informal environment. October 2nd is a great day, as in 2007, the United Nations passed a resolution (A/RES/61/271) establishing it as the annual International Day of Non-Violence. The Day is highlighted as part of the UN’s work for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World. October 2nd is the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, leader of the Indian independence movement and pioneer of the philosophy and strategy of non-violence. In today’s time it is all the more crucial to spread the message of non-violence through education and public awareness. |
