Demark Cartoons

It is now common knowledge that Jylland ¡V Posten, a Danish newspaper, published some cartoons depicting the Islamic prophet Mohammed. It is also well known that Muslims world wide have condemned the caricatures through protests. What is perhaps lesser known is the fact that after the 12 drawings were published on the 30th of September 2005, Danish Muslims held protests and sought immediate intervention unsuccessfully by the Danish Government. It may also surprise people to read that the Arab League tried to meet with the Danish representative at their Head Quarters in Egypt and that at least ten Muslim Ambassadors tried to secure a meeting with the Danish Prime Minister during October ¡V December last year, all of which were unsuccessful.

Now if we fast forward to January the 6th 2006, several other European countries have re-published the animations in the name of ¡§Press Freedom¡¨.Once again there has been protests by the Muslim World from Syria, Iraq, Iran Afghanistan, Turkey, Indonesia, Pakistan, England and New Zealand.

As Muslims the questions we need to ask are:

  • Why were the cartoons allowed to be published?
  • Why after three months of asking by Muslim groups for a peaceful solution was there no response from both Jylland ¡V Posten and the Danish Government?
  • Why is the excuse of ¡§Press Freedom¡¨ being used as a tool for an anti-Islamic campaign?
  • Why is the media to once again harm the peaceful nature of Islam using the image of Muslim protest?

As Muslims we would like the Public to understand that:

  • We forgive the ones who commit mistakes by error or ill-advised means.
  • There can be no religious equality unless a blasphemy law is set p to include Islam.
  • Islam is a peaceful religion and Muslims love peace.
  • Prophet Muhammad is a messenger of peace.

Silent Protest

A peaceful rally against the Danish Cartoons at ChaterGarden, commencing at 12.30 p.m. on 26th of February 2006 was organized by the Trustee. Our Committee had arranged some of our teachers and students to attend the protest.
