Islamic Kasim Tuet Memorial College

Introduction

Islamic Kasim Tuet Memorial College is a government-aided secondary school, founded and managed by the Chinese Muslim Cultural and Fraternal Association. The school building and campus conform to the latest design standards, with 26 classrooms and 14 special rooms including computer rooms, music room, art room, geography room and library. All classrooms are air-conditioned. There are a covered playground and an open air playground.

The school is among the first schools to take part in the School Based Management initiative to enhance the standard of school administration. The Management Board is well represented with nominees from the school sponsoring body, community leaders, the principal, representatives from the staff, parents and alumni.

The school is focused on student-centred education, which is underscored by strict discipline and individual care. We strive to help our students cultivate a positive outlook on life, a healthy measure of self-respect, self-worth and self-confidence as well as a due sense of respect for others.

The school has a Parent-Teacher Association, which provides a good communication channel between parents and the school as well as enhances the cooperation of the two parties. When equipped with a fuller understanding of students' character and conduct, teachers are better able to cater for individual interests and potentials in pursuit of an all-round education for the students.

We consider that a good teacher-student relationship is a major contributing factor towards pleasurable learning. It is also our strong conviction that school life should consist of not only an interactive process of mutual care and support, but also a shared experience and a concerted effort towards achieving the mutual goal. Hence, the school regularly holds social functions like “Karaoke Singing Contest” and school activities like “Thankyou Card Exchange” to enhance student-teacher understanding and mutual respect.

We appreciate that S1 students need time to adjust to secondary school life. To help them make the transition to secondary school as soon as possible, the school organises a series of induction programmes specially for them, including the “S1 New Students Welcome Party” and the “Big Brothers and Big Sisters Scheme”. The latter is a mentor system whereby S1 students are assigned mentors who are students in S4 and S6, and who give them guidance and assistance in schoolwork or other aspects of school life.

Academically speaking, we strive to help S1-S3 students to develop a good mastery of the basics of the three fundamental subjects of Chinese, English and Mathematics. To enhance teaching effectiveness, we manage to keep the group size small in these classes and enable the teachers to give their students more individual attention and guidance. When some students show a special interest in Chinese, teachers will help them design a suitable enrichment reading programme on an individual basis. Similarly, teachers will provide those students with a good aptitude in Mathematics with a more rigorous programme of training on an individual basis.

In the senior forms (i.e. S4-S7), students can choose to study in three different streams: Arts, Science and Commerce. On top of the traditional subjects, the school also offers elective subjects like Travel and Tourism, Art, Computer Studies and Human Biology to cater for broader interests and to maximize the students' potentials.

Adolescence is an important period of growth in the life cycle. At this age, adolescents are susceptible to outside influences, which help to mould their character for better or for worse. So, we cannot afford to overlook the importance of moral education. In the school assembly, we take every opportunity to urge students to adopt acceptable and good behaviour. Besides, we make arrangements for S1-S4 students to have lunch at school so that they can take a more active part in school activities and enjoy a richer school life. When students are dismissed, teachers will patrol the neighbourhood area of the school to make sure that they go home safely.

It is our sincere belief that timely praise will serve to enhance students' self-confidence and encourage them to practise good manners and do good deeds. The “Comprehensive Award Scheme” is devised with this guiding principle in mind. Whenever students show some good performance in academic study, extra-curricular activities, or general conduct, their teachers will give timely approval and appropriate award.

The school is equipped with the facilities for rock climbing and adventure based training. Students are encouraged to take part in these challenging activities and learn to make inreasing demands on their abilities. The school is well known for its “Adventure Based Counseling”. The focus in junior forms is on behaviour training, aimed at improving their interpersonal relationship and communication skills. For senior students, the emphasis is placed on enhancing their self-confidence and self-image, thus helping them to realize their leadership potential.

There is a Student Union in the school, managed by an Executive Committee elected for a fixed term of office. All students at school are eligible for election as well as to vote.

In answer to Government's policy on giving additional support to “Newly Arrived Children”, the school has developed its own induction programme for this group of children. Guidance teachers strive to help the students, through a series of social and skills activities like tea gathering, social skills training, site visits and “Hong Kong One-Day Tour”, to adapt to the new school as quickly as possible, to get to know Hong Kong and to get on well with their neighbours. Besides, English teachers recognize their need for extra help to catch up with their English and so organise bridging courses after school to help them attain the required standard.
